日本へも何度か来たことのある著名なDelgado博士が蒙古襲来と鷹島海底遺跡などについて本を出版されました。鷹島海底遺跡の発掘に参加した関係者や2008年の海洋考古学フォーラムに参加した人はデルガド博士にお会いしたはずです。鷹島にカナダからの撮影メンバーを連れてきた先生です。
さて、肝心の本の内容ですが．．．もちろん英語が読めないといけませんが、アメリカ人向けに書かれているので日本人の歴史好きの人には物足りないかも知れません。神風と第2次大戦の関係を多少重視しすぎている気もします。ですが、最新の考古学の情報、そして大きな視野で蒙古襲来を見ていることなどはアプローチの仕方などが新鮮に感じます。
また、鷹島の発掘や調査に参加した人には懐かしく感じるかもしれません。日本での発掘の様子や人物の紹介なども物語風に描かれています。デルガドさんを覚えてる人は読んでみるともしかしたら、「あれ、これ自分のこと？」と思うことでしょう．．．もちろん私もちょくちょく出てきます（写真つき）。歴史の本として部類されるよりは体験談と随筆といったところでしょうか？日本語に翻訳されるか今のところ予定はないそうです。
元寇遺跡、水中考古学に興味のある人はぜひどうぞ。値段も意外とお手ごろ価格です。
