The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will conduct an underwater sonar survey in portions of the Ohio River where new bridges will be built.

Two bridges are planned for the river: one next to the Kennedy bridge downtown, and the other located farther east, spanning between Prospect, Ky., and Utica, Ind. Work is expected to begin in 2007 and be complete by 2020.

The survey will search for potential historic resources, including evidence of historic vessels such as flatboats, steamers, paddle boats or old barges, along those corridors. The sonar images will be inspected by archaeologists.

“If we do find the remains of old vessels, we’ll check documents and records from their era and see if they match up with what is found,” Wayna Roach, transportation cabinet project archaeologist, said in a news release. “If that doesn’t provide sufficient information, we might send someone down to recover a sample of materials.”

If historic resources are located, the archaeologists will discuss options for avoiding the location with Ohio River Bridges Project officials.
