Antiques salvaged from a shipwreck in Vietnam’s southernmost Ca Mau province are being put up for auction in the Netherlands’ capital of Amsterdam, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The three-day auction, organized by Unicom & Sotheby’s, kicked off on Jan. 29 with some 76,000 porcelain dishes, pots and statues which are unique in design.

They are among the nearly 100,000 artifacts found on the Ca Mau wreck, which was salvaged between 1998 and 1999 by Ca Mau province in collaboration with the Vietnam History Museum.

Previously, the province spent over VND13 billion (US$921,400) to collect 32,569 antiques that several fishermen in central Binh Thuan province has taken illegally from the wreck.

Goods on the ship are mostly pottery and chinaware made at kilns in Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces in China during the Qing dynasty in 1723-1735.

Nguyen Dinh Chien, head of the Ca Mau wreck salvage team, said the ship was believed to have caught fire before sinking while on the way to China’s Guangdong to Jakarta in Indonesia.

Ca Mau and Binh Thuan last year received permission from the Vietnamese government to sign a contract with Unicom & Sotheby’s to auction part of the shipwreck antiques in the Netherlands.

Between September and December last year, Unicom & Sotheby’s organized exhibitions to showcase these antiques in China, Hong Kong and some major cities in the Europe.

The provincial authorities said the proceeds from the auction, expected to be up to $2.5 million, will be used for research, surveys and salvages of archeological relics under the water.

Vietnam spent VND13 billion (nearly $810,000) to salvage the Ca Mau wreck.
